Great news from the lab of Dr. Jason Carmel! Thanks to support from the TRF, Dr. Carmel and his associates have recently published an article in the prestigious Journal of Physiology. They have been using electrical stimulation to strengthen the connections of the nerves in the brain and in the spinal cord. They have shown that neural connections can be strengthened during the period of stimulation with lasting changes that are seen when the stimulation is removed. Their work has been on rats, with the goal of perfecting their methods and protocols in order to translate this work into humans. We are excited to follow their advancements and look forward to the day when they are able to use this information to improve the neuromuscular control of a person with a spinal cord injury.
