The Travis Roy Foundation relies on the generosity of its supporters, and since its inception in 1997, countless individuals and organizations have helped further the Foundation's mission. Among the recent events that have helped support the Travis Roy Foundation or otherwise brought attention to the cause of spinal cord injuries:


Travis Roy Award - Presented Annually Since 1996


Since 1996, the Travis Roy Award has been presented annually at the Maine State Class A High School Hockey Banquet to a high school senior based on academic achievement, community involvement and playing ability. The award was named in honor of Travis Roy Foundation founder Travis Roy, a native of Yarmouth, ME and proud alumnus of North Yarmouth Academy, home of the Travis Roy Arena.

INVITATIONAL golf tournament

Annual Event 1996-2005

The longest running annual event that benefits the Travis Roy Foundation, the Travis Roy Foundation Invitational Golf Tournament was a privately run event hosted by ESPN anchor John Buccigross and NHL players Chris Drury, Tom Poti and Ted Drury and attracted numerous professional and Olympic athletes as guests over its ten years. The event launched in 1996 and raised more than $275,000 for the Foundation.

Chris Drury, a center with the NHL's Buffalo Sabres, was the 1999 NHL Rookie of the Year, a 2001 Stanley Cup Champion with the Colorado Avalanche, and a 2002 US Olympic Silver Medalist. He also received the prestigious Hobey Baker Award in 1998 as the top NCAA D-I player. Tom Poti, a 2003 NHL All-Star defenseman with the NY Rangers, was a 1999 All-Rookie selection and a 2002 US Olympic Silver Medalist. 2002-03 marked his best season as a pro with a career-high 11g-37a-48pts.  Ted Drury is a veteran of eight NHL seasons and represented the US at the 2003 World Championships in Finland; he was also a member of the 1998 US National team. A 1992 and 1994 US Olympian, 2004-05 marked Drury's 12th pro season and second playing for the Kassel Huskies of the German Elite League. John Buccigross is an anchor with ESPN and hosts the popular show NHL2Night. He has also participated in other Travis Roy Foundation events, including the VT Wiffle Ball Tournament to Benefit the Travis Roy Foundation.

Boston University Terriers vs. NHL Stars - October 24, 2004


The Boston University Terriers varsity hockey team will play a team comprised of current and former NHL stars, all BU alumni, in a benefit exhibition game at 1:00 PM on Sunday, October 24, 2004 at BU’s Walter Brown Arena. The event raised more than $20,000.

NHL players who played in the game included: Chris Drury (Buffalo Sabres), Shawn McEachern (Atlanta Thrashers), Tom Poti (NY Rangers), Mike Grier (Buffalo Sabres), Rick DiPietro (NY Islanders), Jay Pandolfo (NJ Devils), Shawn Bates (NY Islanders), Dan LaCouture (NY Rangers), Adrian Aucoin (NY Islanders), Scott Lachance (Columbus Blue Jackets), Scott Young (Dallas Stars), and Joe Sacco (NHL - retired) .

Proceeds benefited the Travis Roy Foundation and the Mark Bavis Leadership Foundation.

Maine-USSSA Slow Pitch Softball Tournament  - May 14-16, 2004


The United States Specialty Sports Association of Maine (Maine-USSSA) hosted a benefit tournament to benefit the Travis Roy Foundation on May 14-16, 2004.

The event was held in beautiful Portland, Maine.

15-year-old Jack Shadduck's Marathon Miracle - April 2004


In April 2004, just prior to the Boston Marathon, Jack Shadduck, 15, "biked" a complete 26.2 mile marathon of his own, using an FES bike. Jack became a vent-dependent quadriplegic at the age of 13 due to Transverse Myelitis, a rare inflammation of the spinal cord.

 

Proceeds from Jack's "marathon" benefited the the Northeast Spinal Cord Initiative. Jack participated in NESCI's pilot program, the First Five Project, and funds generated by his marathon will go to expand the program to 40 participants. "First Five" stands for the measurement of 5 on a scale of 0 to 5 in both motor and sensory functions as well as Functional Improvement Via Exercise and is a six-month long intensive exercise program.

10-year-old Garrett Burgess' Cross-Country Flight - July 27-August 27, 2003


Garrett Burgess, 10,  and his father flew a single engine plane to every continental state capital in the United States over 30 days during the summer of 2003, meeting with governors, state officials and spinal cord injury survivors/organizations at as many stops as possible. 

 

Proceeds from the privately financed trip benefited three spinal cord injury foundations including the Travis Roy Foundation. Funds donated to the Foundation went towards efforts to build a spinal cord research and rehabilitation center in New England.

 

In recognition of his extraordinary trip, Garrett was honored by the Travis Roy Foundation at the 2003 Beanpot Benefit Golf Tournament.

10-year-old Garrett Burgess was paralyzed from the shoulders

down following a car accident at the age of 5. In 2003, he

and his father flew a single engine plane to 49 state capitals

 and Washington, DC to raise SCI awareness & funds.

 


Vazzy's Restaurant Golf Tournament - July 28, 2003


The Travis Roy Foundation was one of three charities to benefit from proceeds from the 2003 Vazzy's Restaurant Golf Tournament. The event was held July 28 at the beautiful Mill River Country Club in Stratford, CT.

In addition to holding his own tournament, John Vazzano, owner of a chain of Vazzy's Restaurants located in CT, has been a longtime participant and sponsor of the CT-based Travis Roy Foundation Invitational Golf Tournament.

Rochester, NY Travis Roy Golf Tournament - August 19, 2002


The fifth and final Travis Roy Golf Tournament was held on August 19, 2002 at the beautiful Ravenwood Golf Course in Victor, NY. Started in 1998, this annual event raised $45,000 for the Travis Roy Foundation over five years. Half of the proceeds from the events were distributed to Rochester's Strong Memorial Hospital with the remainder of funds used for individual grants.

Following a one-year hiatus, the Rochester-based organizing group returned in 2004 with the Rochester Art Gala to Benefit the Travis Roy Foundation.

Jubilee Yacht Club Travis Roy Regatta - August 3, 2002


A great afternoon & evening on the water, the Travis Roy Regatta for Paralysis was held on August 3, 2002 and benefited the Travis Roy Foundation, John Montague Foundation and the Greater Boston Chapter of the National Spinal Cord Injury Association.
