Chris Drury of Colorado Avalanche and Ted Drury of NY Islanders to Host 6/26 Travis Roy Foundation Golf Tournament

Participants To Include Martin Brodeur & Bob Carpenter of 2000 Stanley Cup Champion NJ Devils

Orange, CT -- The 5th Annual Travis Roy Foundation Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, June 26, 2000 at the Racebrook Country Club in Orange, CT. Chris Drury of the Colorado Avalanche and Ted Drury of the New York Islanders will once again host the charitable tournament, with all proceeds going to the Travis Roy Foundation. Also expected to participate in the tournament are goaltender Martin Brodeur and Assistant Coach Bob Carpenter of the 2000 Stanley Cup champion New Jersey Devils.

Travis Roy: On October 20, 1995, Travis Roy, then a 20-year-old Boston University freshman, was paralyzed from the shoulders down just 11 seconds into his first college game. Since his accident, Roy has joined actor Christopher Reeve as one of the most recognizable and articulate spokesmen on behalf of the disabled. He founded the Travis Roy Foundation (Tax ID# 04-3327883) in 1996 to aid individuals who have suffered spinal cord injuries; the Foundation also supports research and education efforts relating to those injuries. Roy is a recent graduate of Boston University College of Communication and the author of a book, “Eleven Seconds”, based on his life. A movie based on his book is currently in the works with production expected to begin this winter. Jamie Redford, son of actor/director Robert Redford, will write the screenplay for the film.

Chris and Ted Drury: Chris Drury, a college teammate of Roy’s, launched The Travis Roy Foundation Golf Tournament in 1996. Drury recently completed his second year with the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League. Drury was the 1999 recipient of the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL Rookie of the Year and was also named The Sporting News 1999 Rookie of the Year, as voted by a poll of NHL players. Ted Drury recently completed his seventh NHL season and first with the New York Islanders. The veteran forward has also played for the Ottawa Senators, Hartford Whalers, Calgary Flames and Anaheim Mighty Ducks, and was a member of the 1992 US Olympic Team.

Sports auction to benefit spinal cord research: A sellout crowd of more than 200 golfers is expected to participate in the 5th annual day-long tournament, with groups teeing off at 8:00 AM and 1:00 PM. Hundreds more are expected to attend a post-tournament sports memorabilia auction featuring hundreds of items donated by professional sports teams, athletes and local businesses. Highlight items in the auction will include: a 22-player signed NY Yankees jersey; a team-signed authentic jersey from the 2000 Stanley Cup Champion New Jersey Devils; and a Yogi Berra and Don Larson signed and dated “Perfect Game” 11x14 photo. Also included in the auction will be items from Celtics legend Larry Bird, baseball’s ironman Cal Ripken, Jr., Broncos’ great John Elway, golf legend Tiger Woods and more.

The dinner and auction are scheduled to begin immediately following the golf tournament, at approximately 5:30 PM. Tickets to the post-tournament dinner and auction only (no golf) are available for $50. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Travis Roy Foundation.
