ROY FOUNDATION HOLDS SUCCESSFUL FUNDRAISER
DURING
OPENING ROUND OF BEANPOT TOURNAMENT
PREPARES FOR FINAL FUNDRAISER TO BE HELD
DURING
CHAMPIONSHIP GAME FEBRUARY 9
BOSTON, MA – The Travis Roy Foundation
raised more than $2,000 from 50/50 raffle ticket sales during the
first round of the prestigious Beanpot
Tournament, which was held Monday, February 2nd at the FleetCenter.
The first raffle drawing took place during the third period of the 5
PM game which saw perennial Beanpot powerhouse Boston University
defeat Northeastern University. The winner of the raffle split the
pot with the Foundation, with each taking home $575.50. The second
drawing took place during the third period of the 8 PM game which
saw nationally ranked Boston College beat Harvard University. With a
larger crowd on hand to see the later game, the pot grew to just
under $3,000 dollars, which was divided evenly between the holder of
the winning ticket and the Travis Roy Foundation.
Travis Roy and
volunteers from the Foundation will be on hand to sell 50/50 tickets
during the Championship round of the Beanpot Tournament, which will
be held on Monday, February 9. Tickets will go on sale during the
third period of the Consolation game which will pit the Northeastern
Huskies vs. the Harvard Crimson. The drawing will take place during
the third period of the Championship game, which will feature a pair
of long-time rivals, the Boston University Terriers and the Boston
College Eagles.
One of the premier college hockey
tournaments in the country, the two-day Beanpot Tournament has been
held annually for 52 years. This is the first year that the Travis
Roy Foundation has participated in a fundraising event during the
tournament, and we wish to thank the FleetCenter, Boston Bruins and
Boston University for all of their help in making this event happen.

TRAVIS ROY: On October 20, 1995, only
eleven seconds into the first shift of his college hockey career at
Boston University, Travis Roy’s dream was cut cruelly short when he
shattered his fourth cervical vertebra, severely damaging his spinal
cord. Travis Roy is now a quadriplegic, with no feeling below his
shoulders and no movement in his legs or left arm. With limited
control of his right bicep, Travis is able to conduct simple yet key
tasks such as operating the joystick of his wheelchair. Travis has
faced his disability with the same sense of optimism and
determination that distinguished his hockey career. A May 2000
graduate of BU with a degree in public relations, he currently
resides on his own in Boston and is a popular motivational speaker.
In 1998, he published a book, Eleven Seconds, based on his life and
is actively involved with the day-to-day operations of the Travis
Roy Foundation.
TRAVIS ROY FOUNDATION: The Travis Roy
Foundation was founded in 1997 to help spinal cord injury survivors
purchase adaptive and medical equipment as well as to fund spinal
cord research. More than one million dollars in grants has been
distributed, and any paraplegic or quadriplegic who has suffered a
spinal cord injury is eligible to apply for an individual grant. A
small Boston-based nonprofit with very little overhead, more than 99
cents of every dollar donated goes directly to the Foundation’s
charitable purposes. Donations are tax deductible and may be mailed
to Travis Roy Foundation, 111 Huntington Avenue at Prudential
Center, Boston, MA 02219. Information about the Travis Roy
