Consensus Conference: Establishing a Center of Excellence for Spinal Cord Injuries
Shriner's Children's Hospital -- Boston, MA November 13-14, 2002 Boston, MA -- The Travis Roy Foundation, in conjunction with the Boston College William F. Connell School of Nursing Continuing Education Program, sponsored a consensus conference on November 13-14, 2002 regarding the possibility of establishing "A Center of Excellence for Spinal Cord Injuries" in the Boston area. The aim of the conference was to bring together interested parties with the ultimate goal of funding and building a New England center for spinal cord injuries. The conference was made possible by a grant from the Travis Roy Foundation. Guests at the two-day conference represented a cross section of people whose lives have been affected by spinal cord injuries and included clinicians, social workers, researchers, insurance executives, members of the financial community, government officials and community activists, as well as individuals living with a spinal cord injury and members of their families. Highlight speakers included Travis Roy, founder of the Travis Roy Foundation, Dr. Wise Young, director of the W.M. Keck Center for Collaborative Neurosciences, and Alana Shepherd, founder of the renowned Shepherd Center. Boston organizers hope to model a New England Center after the Atlanta-based Shepherd Center. Massachusetts Senator John Kerry (D-MA), who was scheduled to attend the event, addressed the crowd by phone from Washington, DC, expressing his support for the group's efforts. For information of this conference and future plans for this initiative, please see the NESCI section of the Travis Roy Foundation web site at www.travisroyfoundation.org or visit the New England Spinal Cord Initiative web site at www.nesci.us.
