08-16-2005 Vermont Hockey Players Attend Travis RoyFoundation Wiffle Ball Tournament
Author: Chris J. Wojcik BURLINGTON, Vt. - Members of the University of Vermont men’s hockey team attended the fourth annual Travis Roy Foundation Wiffle Ball Tournament this weekend at Little Fenway Park in Essex, Vt. Last year’s ECACHL Rookie of the Year Joe Fallon (Bemidji, Minn.) and incoming freshmen Corey Carlson (Two Harbors, Minn.) and Kyle Kuk (Monroe, Mich.) took part in the event that raised more than $40,000 for the foundation. Roy was a promising 20-year-old hockey star when moments into his first collegiate game as a Boston University freshman, a freak accident drove Travis into the boards. A cracked fourth vertebra left him paralyzed from the neck down. Formed at the request of Roy and his family, the Travis Roy Foundation helps spinal chord injury survivors, and funds research toward the cure. Since it’s creation in 1997, the foundation has paid out more than $1.3 million in grants to individuals throughout the country with spinal cord injuries to purchase adaptive equipment, and for research and rehabilitation projects.
