Drury in Hosting Charity Event
Orange,
CT – ESPN anchor John Buccigross will join NHL All-Star
defenseman Tom Poti of the NY Rangers, Buffalo Sabres forward
Chris Drury and 8-year NHL veteran Ted Drury as co-host of the
Travis Roy Foundation Invitational Golf
Tournament. The annual event has raised more than $250,000 for the
Travis Roy Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that distributes
grants to spinal cord injury survivors in financial need and also supports
research and education efforts relating to those injuries. The 10th Annual
Travis Roy Foundation Invitational Golf Tournament is scheduled for June
27, 2005 at the exclusive Race Brook Country Club in Orange, CT.
John
Buccigross is an anchor with ESPN and hosts the popular show NHL2Night. He
is also a frequent columnist for ESPN.com. A past celebrity guest at the
Connecticut tournament, 2005 marks his first year hosting the event. He
joins a trio of pro hockey players as host: Chris Drury, a center with the
NHL's Buffalo Sabres, was the 1999 NHL Rookie of the Year, a 2001 Stanley
Cup Champion with the Colorado Avalanche, 2002 US Olympic Silver Medalist
and a member of the 2004 US National Team. Drury also received the
prestigious Hobey Baker Award in 1998 as the top NCAA D-I player. Tom
Poti, a 2003 NHL All-Star defenseman with the NY Rangers, was a 1999
All-Rookie selection and a 2002 US Olympic Silver Medalist. Ted Drury is a
twelve-year veteran, including eight NHL seasons. He represented the US at
the 2003 World Championships in Finland and was also a member of the 1998
US National Team. A 1992 and 1994 US Olympian, 2004-05 marked Drury's
third season playing in Germany.
“We are thrilled to include John Buccigross as a host of this event,”
Travis Roy said. “He has been
integral part of the tournament’s success, and I know the other celebrity
hosts and the organizers of the Travis Roy Foundation Invitational look
forward to making this an event he will be proud to lend his name and time
to.”
TRAVIS ROY FOUNDATION: The Travis Roy
Foundation distributes grants to individuals and organizations across
North America. Individual grant funds have been used to modify vans and to
purchase wheelchairs, computers, ramps, shower chairs, and other adaptive
equipment to help quadriplegics and paraplegics in financial need live
more independent lives. The Foundation is involved in efforts to build a
state-of-the-art spinal cord center that would treat patients from across
the Northeast United States and also supports a “The First Five Project”,
a Boston-based high intensity, focused exercise program for motivated
spinal cord injured adolescents and adults with quadriplegia. On October
20, 1995, only eleven seconds into the first shift of his college hockey
career, Travis Roy shattered his fourth cervical vertebra, severely
damaging his spinal cord and rendering him a quadriplegic, paralyzed from
the shoulders down. A May 2000 graduate of Boston University with a degree
in public relations, he now works as a motivational speaker and is
actively involved with the Foundation. In 1998, he published a book,
Eleven Seconds; the book is scheduled to be re-released with new chapters
in the near future. In 2004, he made his debut as a college hockey analyst
with WMTW TV-8 in Portland, ME, and in 2005, he worked as a color analyst
with ESPN’s top hockey broadcast team of Gary Thorne and Bill Clement
during ESPN’s national coverage of the NCAA D-I college hockey regional
playoffs.
