Orange, CT – Travis Roy, founder of the Travis Roy Foundation, will be honored on Monday, June 28, 2004 in recognition of his personal and professional accomplishments. The presentation will take place during the evening portion of the 9th Annual Travis Roy Foundation Invitational Golf Tournament at the Race Brook Country Club in Orange, CT. Boston University Head Hockey Coach Jack Parker will make the presentation.

TRAVIS ROY: Travis Roy gained national notoriety on October 20, 1995 when, as a 20-year-old Boston University freshman, he was paralyzed from the shoulders down just 11 seconds into his first college game. Since his accident, he has joined actor Christopher Reeve as one of the most recognizable and articulate spokesmen on behalf of the disabled. A May 2000 graduate of Boston University with a degree in public relations, Roy is a popular motivational speaker and the author of a book, Eleven Seconds, based on his life. He is actively involved in the activities of the Travis Roy Foundation and made his debut as a college hockey analyst for WMTW-TV8 in Portland, ME during the 2003-04 season.

THE TRAVIS ROY FOUNDATION: The Travis Roy Foundation (www.travisroyfoundation.org) is a nonprofit organization that distributes grants to victims of spinal cord paralysis and supports research and education efforts relating to those injuries. A small Boston-based nonprofit organization with very little overhead, the Foundation has distributed more than $1,000,000 in grants to spinal cord injured individuals in financial need as well as to research institutes across the country. With its emphasis on providing adaptive equipment and supporting research, the Foundation is uniquely position to have a direct and profound impact on the lives of spinal cord injury survivors. The Travis Roy Foundation is also involved in efforts to build a state of the art spinal cord injury center in the Northeast through the Northeast Spinal Cord Initiative (NESCI) so that patients in this area will be able to obtain the best treatment close to home.

TRAVIS ROY FOUNDATION INVITATIONAL: The longest running and one of the Foundation’s largest annual fund-raisers, the Travis Roy Foundation Invitational Golf Tournament was launched in 1996 by Chris Drury, a college teammate and linemate of Travis Roy, Ted Drury, and Orange, CT businessmen Michael and John Ferguson. Michael Ferguson and John Ferguson serve as the event’s directors along with Jana Spaulding, a sports public relations professional who joined the tournament in 1998. NHL All-Star and NY Rangers defenseman Tom Poti, a guest at every event since 1997, joined Chris and Ted Drury as a host of the event in 2003. The tournament, which was originally created as a small, one-time event to help offset Roy’s medical bills, has raised more than $200,000 for the Travis Roy Foundation.

A sellout crowd of more than 250 golfers and 400-450 guests is expected to attend the 9th annual event on June 28, 2004. Guests will include BU Head Coach Jack Parker, Yale Head Hockey Coach Tim Taylor, St. Louis Blues forward Eric Boguniecki, NY Rangers defenseman Dan LaCouture, NY Rangers goaltender Steve Valiquette, NY Islanders prospect Jeff Hamilton of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, and ESPN personality John Buccigross. A post-tournament auction will feature items including a Wayne Gretzky signed NY Rangers authentic jersey, a framed photo of the “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” signed by Bobby Thomson and Ralph Branca, a team-signed NHL All-Star authentic jersey, Boston Red Sox, NY Yankees and NY Mets tickets, and items signed by such notable athletes as Bobby Orr, Jim Craig, John Elway, Randy Johnson and Yogi Berra.
