TRAVIS ROY TO PRESENT AWARDS OF APPRECIATION

TO CHRIS DRURY, TOM POTI & TED DRURY

Travis Roy Will Make the Presentation at the 8th Annual

Travis Roy Foundation Invitational Golf Tournament on June 30

Orange, CT – Travis Roy, founder of the Travis Roy Foundation, will make a special presentation to New York Rangers defenseman Tom Poti, Calgary Flames forward Chris Drury and 8-year NHL veteran Ted Drury, co-hosts of the Travis Roy Foundation Invitational Golf Tournament. The presentation will take place during the 8th annual event on Monday, June 30 at the Race Brook Country Club in Orange, CT. The Travis Roy Foundation is a nonprofit organization that distributes grants to survivors of spinal cord paralysis and also supports research and education efforts relating to those injuries

“In 1996, when the first tournament was held, never would I have imagined that it would still be going strong eight years later,” Travis Roy said. “I would like to thank Chris Drury, Tom Poti and Ted Drury for lending their time and support to this tournament and to the Foundation. The financial support and media attention that they have helped to bring to the Travis Roy Foundation and spinal cord injuries is invaluable, and I appreciate everything they have done more than they know.”

“This event has helped raise more than $200,000 for the Travis Roy Foundation, and because of that generosity, we have been able to alleviate some of the hardships that spinal cord injured (SCI) individuals and their families face after their injury,” he said. “For example, by helping to purchase a voice-activated computer it enables an SCI person to communicate on an equal level with an able-bodied person, allowing them to go back to school or find a job that otherwise might not have been possible. Grants from the Travis Roy Foundation are also commonly given out to paraplegics and quadriplegics to help purchase accessible vans, wheelchairs or to make home modifications. These grants can completely change the quality of life for a person with a spinal cord injury and their family.”

THE TRAVIS ROY FOUNDATION was founded in 1997. A small Boston-based nonprofit organization with very little overhead, the Foundation has distributed more than $1,000,000 in grants to spinal cord injured individuals in financial need as well as to research institutes across the country. Travis Roy gained national notoriety on October 20, 1995 when, as a 20-year-old Boston University freshman, he was paralyzed from the shoulders down just 11 seconds into his first college game. Since his accident, he has joined actor Christopher Reeve as one of the most recognizable and articulate spokesmen on behalf of the disabled. A May 2000 graduate of Boston University with a degree in public relations, Roy is a popular motivational speaker and the author of a book, Eleven Seconds, based on his life. He is actively involved in the activities of the Travis Roy Foundation.

THE TRAVIS ROY FOUNDATION INVITATIONAL was launched in 1996 by Chris Drury, a college teammate of Travis Roy, his brother Ted Drury, and Orange, CT businessmen Michael and John Ferguson. Michael Ferguson and John Ferguson serve as the event’s co-directors along with Jana Spaulding, a sports public relations professional who joined the tournament in 1998. Tom Poti, a guest at the event since 1997, joined the event as a co-host in 2003. The tournament, which was originally formed as a small one-time event to raise money to offset Roy’s medical bills, has quickly grown into a major annual fund-raiser for the Travis Roy Foundation and, including this year’s event, has raised more than $200,000 for that organization. A sellout crowd of more than 250 golfers and 500 guests is expected to attend the 8th annual event on June 30, 2003.
