TRAVIS ROY MAKES SUCCESSFUL DEBUT AS COLLEGE HOCKEY ANALYST WITH ESPNU
Joins Top ESPN Team of Bill Clement and Gary Thorne in Covering 2005 NCAA Division I East Regionals
Boston, MA -- On March 25, 2005, Travis Roy joined ESPN's top hockey broadcasting team of Gary Thorne and Bill Clement in covering the 2005 NCAA Division I College Hockey East Regionals held at Worcester, MA. Roy provided color commentary during the second game of the preliminary round as the Boston University Terriers faced the University of North Dakota. The game was broadcast nationally on ESPN's newest station, ESPNU, and was also picked up by several regional television stations.
ESPN launched a new multimedia college sports initiative in March 2005 that includes a new 24-hour television network and content from ESPN.com and ESPN The Magazine. ESPNU will also include information from ESPN Radio, ESPN Mobile (wireless) and ESPN Broadband. The highest-profile facet of the new initiative will be the ESPNU television network, which will carry approximately 300 games live - primarily Division I football and men's and women's basketball - in the first year. The network will also cover baseball, softball, volleyball, lacrosse, hockey, wrestling, spring football and select high school football games. It will also carry regular-season and NCAA championships, along with replays of games on ESPN, ESPN2, ABC and the company's regional networks. The launching of the new venture coincided with ESPN's 25th anniversary.
Roy brought a unique and unexpected perspective of the game, which involved the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux. On March 18, 2005 Sioux sophomore defenseman Robbie Bina shattered C7 vertebra in his neck during the WCHA playoffs. He is expected to make a full recovery. UND is also the team the Boston University Terriers were playing on October 20, 1995, the day Roy suffered a fractured C4/5 vertebra that left him a quadriplegic.
This is Travis Roy's second venture as a college hockey analyst and first on a national basis. During the 2003-04 season, Roy served as a studio analyst for WMTW-TV8 in Portland, ME during their coverage of University of Maine hockey games.
