MAINE CLASS A COACHES ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES FINALISTS FOR 2008 TRAVIS ROY AWARD Portland, ME -- The Maine Class A Coaches Association on Monday announced the finalists for the 13th annual Travis Roy Award, given for academic achievement, community involvement and playing ability. They are:
The award will be presented at a banquet that begins at noon Sunday March 16 at the Ramada Inn and Conference Center in Lewiston. Tony Dube led Biddeford High School to a 24-0 season and a second straight Class A championship with 1.00 GAA and .957 save percentage in 18 games. Dube has a three-year record of 46-9 and a 1.45 GAA. He plans to attend the University of New England next year. Derek Kump finished the 2007-08 season with nine shutouts and holds school records with 17 career shutouts, 48 career wins, and a 1.50 GAA. He becomes the third Travis Roy Award finalist in four years from Falmouth High School, joining Peter Gustavson (2005 winner) and James Tolan (2007). Jon Roy helped Lewiston High School win its fourth straight Eastern Class A title, scoring 26 goals and 24 assists this season. Matt DelGiudice had 28 goals and 37 assists for Messalonskee High School and is that school's second finalist in three years, including 2006 winner, Ted Fabian. In four seasons with the Eagles, he amassed 57 goals and 107 assists. The award is named for Travis Roy, the former Yarmouth resident and North Yarmouth Academy player who was paralyzed from injuries sustained 11 seconds into his first shift at Boston University in 1995. Roy lives and works in Boston, where he is a motivational speaker who works with the charity that bears his name, which raises money and provides grants for research and medical equipment for people with spinal injuries. "I am honored to have my name associated with such a prestigious award and congratulate the finalists," Roy said. "These players represent the best of what high school athletics are about, and I wish them continued success as they continue their hockey and academic careers."
