Chris Drury 2002 Silver Medallist & 2001 Stanley Cup Champion

Orange, CT -- The 7th Annual Travis Roy Foundation Invitational Golf Tournament will be held this Monday, June 24, 2002 at the Race Brook Country Club in Orange, CT. Chris Drury of the Colorado Avalanche and Ted Drury, an 8-year NHL veteran, will once again host the charitable tournament with proceeds going to the Travis Roy Foundation. Since its inception, the event has raised more than $100,000 for the nonprofit organization. Expected guests include: NY Rangers defenseman Tom Poti, ESPN personality John Buccigross, 2002 US women’s hockey Silver Medallist Julie Chu, CT native Eric Boguniecki of the St. Louis Blues, and Mark Mowers of the Nashville Predators. Additional celebrity guests may be added, including a surprise musical performer.

TRAVIS ROY: On October 20, 1995, Travis Roy, then a 20-year-old Boston University freshman, was paralyzed from the shoulders down just 11 seconds into his first college game. Since his accident, Roy has joined actor Christopher Reeve as one of the most recognizable and articulate spokesmen on behalf of the disabled. He founded the Travis Roy Foundation in 1997 to financially assist others who have suffered spinal cord injuries; the Foundation also supports research and education efforts relating to those injuries. Roy is a May 2000 graduate of Boston University and the author of a book, “Eleven Seconds”, based on his life. A movie based on his autobiography is currently in the works.

CHRIS DRURY: Chris Drury, a college teammate of Roy’s, launched The Travis Roy Foundation Invitational Golf Tournament in 1996. 2001-02 marked Drury’s fourth season with the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, and his accolades have been numerous: Olympic Silver Medallist (2002); Stanley Cup Champion (2001); NHL Rookie of the Year (1999); Named one of the Hartford Courant's 25 Top Connecticut Athletes of the Century (1999); Sporting News NHL Rookie of the Year (1999); NHL All-Rookie Team (1999); Hobey Baker Award Winner as top NCAA player (1997), NCAA Champion (1995). Drury’s exposure to the national spotlight came early as the 12-year-old winning pitcher for Trumbull, CT in the 1989 Little League World Series. On May 31, 2002, the Colorado Avalanche were defeated by the eventual Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings four games to three in the NHL conference finals. Drury scored two of the Avalanche’s winning goals in that series, including a dramatic overtime goal, earning the nickname “Mr. Clutch.”

TED DRURY:  2001-02 marked Ted Drury’s ninth professional season, and he split the year between the New Jersey Devils and Carolina Hurricanes organizations. After a late-season trade to Carolina, Drury finished the season with the Hurricanes’ top affiliate, the Lowell (MA) Lock Monsters (AHL). In nine seasons as a pro, the veteran forward has played in 414 NHL games with the Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Islanders, Ottawa Senators, Anaheim Mighty Ducks, Hartford Whalers, and Calgary Flames and was a member of the 1992 and 1994 US Olympic Hockey Teams.

LIVE & SILENT AUCTIONS TO BENEFIT SPINAL CORD RESEARCH: A sellout crowd of more than 250 golfers is scheduled to participate in the daylong tournament. Approximately 400-450 guests are expected to attend a post-tournament auction featuring items donated by professional sports teams, athletes and local businesses. The silent and live auctions will include autographed items from the 2002 and 1980 US Olympic hockey teams; NBA stars Shaquille O’Neal and Jason Kidd; Canada’s 2002 Gold Medal hockey team and pairs skaters Jamie Salé and David Pelletier; NHL greats Bobby Orr and Wayne Gretzky; MLB legend Yogi Berra; two-time NFL MVP Kurt Warner; and much more. The dinner and auction are scheduled to begin immediately following the golf tournament, at approximately 5:30 PM.
