The longest running annual
event that benefits
the Travis Roy Foundation, the
Travis Roy Foundation Invitational Golf
Tournament was a privately run event hosted by NHL players Chris
Drury, Tom Poti and Ted Drury and ESPN anchor
John Buccigrss that ran from 1996-2005. It attracted numerous professional and Olympic
athletes as guests over the years.
The event was launched in 1996 by Chris Drury,
a college teammate and linemate of Travis Roy,
his brother Ted Drury, and Orange, CT
businessmen Michael and John Ferguson. All
proceeds from the event were donated to the
Travis Roy Foundation.
Chris Drury, captain of
the NHL's Buffalo Sabres, was the 1999
NHL Rookie of the Year, a 2001 Stanley Cup
Champion with the Colorado Avalanche, a
2002 US Olympic Silver Medalist and a member
of the 2004 US National Team. He also
received the prestigious Hobey Baker Award in
1998 as the top NCAA D-I player. Tom Poti, a
2003 NHL All-Star defenseman with the NY Rangers, was a 1999
All-Rookie selection and a 2002 US Olympic Silver
Medalist. 2002-03 marked his best season as a
pro with a career-high 11g-37a-48pts. Ted Drury
is a thirteen-year veteran, including eight NHL
seasons. He
represented the United States at the 2003
World Championships in Finland and was also a
member of the 1998 US National Team. A 1992 and 1994 US Olympian, 2005-06
marked
Drury's fourth season playing overseas for
the Deutsche Elite League (DEL) and first with
the Krefeld Penguins.
John Buccigross is an anchor with ESPN and
hosts the popular show NHL2Night.
Michael and John Ferguson served
as the event’s co-directors along with Jana
Spaulding, a sports public relations
professional who joined the tournament in
1998. The tournament, which was originally
formed as a small one-time event to raise
money to offset Travis Roy’s medical bills,
quickly grew into a major annual
fundraiser for the Travis Roy Foundation that raised more than $275,000 for that
organization over its ten tournaments.
The group has also held events
to raise funds for the NHL's Hockey Fights
Cancer program. John Ferguson was recognized
by the National Hockey League at the 2003 NHL
All-Star Game for his fund-raising efforts on
behalf of that program.
